The Replacements purists will cringe when I say this, but I think this is the Replacements most accessible album. Probably the most consistent as well.
If you have never listened to a Mats album I would suggest starting with this one. It really showcases what a great songwriter Paul Westerberg is with out having to listen to throwaway songs like "Tommy's got a boner". There are no throw away songs on this album.
The band was literally breaking up during the recording of this album. It is more melodious, and mellow than most Mats albums. It is consistently good. It never reaches great heights that "Let it be" reached with songs like "I will dare", but it also doesn't have the stinkers that album had with songs like the "boner" song mentioned earlier.
The band has left most of its punk roots behind in favor of an Americana type sound.
I give this album 4 stars out of 5.
