#250 The Clash ...... Combat Rock

Released 1982

I was excited to listen to this album. I love London Calling. I love the two big hits on this record. I think Joe Strummer, and Mick Jones were one of the better songwritting duos in the past 50 years. I think they may have taken themselves too seriously on this album.

Jones arrangements are too thought our. They are too cerebral. Not enough shooting from the hip as they had in most of their previous albums. Strummers lyrics are way too heavy. On London Calling the songs were about some guy called Jimmy Jazz, or a Cadillac, or going to the supermarket. Songs everyday Joe can relate to. On Combat the songs are about Vietnamese orphans. Important, but real heavy. I mean even if it's serious what can we do about it. A protest probably wouldn't work.

Glyn John's was hired to "fix" the songs in post production, and he must have done a good job. Two of the Clashes biggest hits "should I stay or should I go" and "Rock the Casbah" sound great. Heavy rotation on MTV helped boost those songs.

Paul Simmonons bass playing is terrific as usual. I especially love him on Casbah.

I give this album 2.5 stars out of 5
